Notes

Instead of having a new picture taken, this man simply removed the person next to him by scratching them out of the picture entirely. Either it was someone he didn't like very much, or a superstition that a loved one who had passed, had to be removed so their soul could be set free.

Either way, the image was placed in a case with the most striking blue paper backdrop, making the action even more noticable.

It was placed upside down, and there seems to be writing on the back of the case that reads "1851", so it's possible the case is a marriage.
