Notes

The image is reversed in it's case. The ambrotype is on clear glass with the image side on the back of the glass. Usually the image side is on the front, behind the mat.

A copy was made of the image, see below. It was made of the image without case, mat, and preserver, and possibly placed back in the wrong order afterwards.

Another "failed" ambrotype was used as the black backing behind the image, instead of the more commonly used piece of black paper. A pavement, a wooden fence, and some bushes can be seen.

On the table lies a copy of "A Manual of Photographic Chemistry including the Collodion Process" by Thomas Frederick Hardwich. The first and second edition were published in 1855.

The American case is signed by Frederick B Smith & Hermann Hartman who made it for Samuel Peck & Co.
